Aidy White has voiced his admiration for Joel Piroe after his effort in Leeds United’s 4-0 win over Ipswich Town went unnoticed.
The Dutchman scored as the Whites ran riot at Elland Road against second-placed Ipswich. However, the attacker could have added to his tally by hitting the underside of the crossbar.
Piroe has nine goals in the Championship so far this season after joining from Swansea City in the summer. However, due to praise for Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter, White believes Piroe’s influence is “underestimated.”
“Wow,” White exclaimed on BBC Radio Leeds (December 23) when Piroe smashed the crossbar. “Nice little stepover there, he shifts it, and it would have been a nice finish.”
“That would have improved his stats – he is a bit of an underestimated player.”
Four minutes later, the forward scored on a Leeds counterattack, causing White to exclaim, “Tremendous, tremendous goal.” Fair play to the lad, he sold the defender and put it in the back of the net.”
Underappreciated or overshadowed?
Summerville’s goal count for the Championship season increased to 11 during the 4-0 victory, which seemed like a must-win as Leicester City and Ipswich continued to pull away with the championship. So it’s understandable that Piroe isn’t getting the recognition he deserves.
Rutter was also deadly against the Tractor Boys, but he was unable to contribute a single goal, playing brilliantly in the build-up but not within touching distance of the final pass.
Piroe could have had a hat-trick on another day, with one goal, one shot on goal stopped, and another rebounding off the crossbar. All three were goals, and opposing supporters could only praise his performance thus far.
It is, however, not shocking to see the 24-year-old performing so well. He was renowned at his previous club, Swansea, when he scored 22 and 19 goals in consecutive seasons. And he shows no signs of slowing down, particularly with even superior service than before.
In unrelated Leeds United news, a pundit can’t believe one heinous occurrence during the win against Ipswich.
