Alan Shearer addressed Sunderland’s decorative gaffe following Saturday’s FA Cup drama.
Alan Shearer has continued to speak out about Sunderland’s hasty decision to decorate a stadium bar for Newcastle United fans for the FA Cup game this weekend. The derby was a memorable moment for the Magpies, who defeated their Championship rivals 3-0.
The biggest headlines, however, came before the highly anticipated match, when photographs of a Newcastle-themed bar in the away end surfaced. It was then revealed that Sunderland had adorned it, prompting the club to issue a statement promising an investigation into the decision.
Newcastle fans, and even the club, would go on to mock Sunderland for their welcoming hospitality, and the topic has dominated discussion long after the derby. Shearer, a Newcastle fan, took to social media after viewing the photos, and he discussed it again on The Rest is Football podcast.
“Sunderland rolled out the red carpet for the Geordies all week, they wanted the Stadium of Light to feel like home for Newcastle,” he continued. They most certainly did. They let in 6000 fans, who had a terrific time.
“That was done by Sunderland. When I saw those photographs, I assumed that some Geordies had broken into the Stadium of Light and decorated the chamber that was going to be there. Sunderland Football Club did it on their own. Do you believe it? You couldn’t make this stuff up.”
While Sunderland have pledged an investigation of the situation, no major action has been taken, while Newcastle uploaded an image of the Stadium of Light on X following the game. They captioned the photo, “We’ve been made to feel right at home this week.”
