Ally McCoist wants Kalvin Phillips to leave Manchester City, but a move to Newcastle United appears to be farther away than ever.
During the January transfer window, the 28-year-old was extensively connected with a move to St James’ Park, but a deal now appears to be off the table.
Newcastle were said to be confident of signing Phillips, who was eager to join Eddie Howe’s side, but the latest update suggests that won’t be the case.
Newcastle have reportedly cooled their interest in the midfielder, with Manchester City reportedly unwilling to decrease their expectations. They are seeking a loan fee of approximately £7 million, as well as an obligation to purchase at the end of the season.
That does not sit well with Newcastle, who have grown frustrated and have lost all hope of concluding a deal.
Newcastle will not receive the midfielder they have been looking for, and Phillips may not get the move he requires now that the deal has fallen through. It has been suggested that Phillips could join Crystal Palace, however we are halfway through the transfer window and he has failed to find a new club, despite Pep Guardiola making it clear that he has no future at the Etihad Stadium.
That is why Ally McCoist insists Phillips must leave teams this month.

On TalkSPORT on Tuesday morning, McCoist discussed Phillips’ future and expressed his desire for him to leave Man City and play regularly elsewhere.
“I just think the boy has got to get away and play,” that’s what he stated.
“I mean, we’ve discussed it before in terms of the upcoming Euros.” I know Gareth [Southgate] is a devoted fan of Harry Maguire, for example.
“It doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t be in the squad if you’re not playing.” The goalkeeper situation is different.
“Pep Guardiola has made it abundantly obvious, as obvious as I’ve ever seen any coach or manager say, wee man, you’re not in my plans.”
Phillips must simply leave, whether to Newcastle or elsewhere.
Phillips needs to play football, whether at Newcastle or elsewhere. He wants to be in Gareth Southgate’s England side for Euro 2024, but that may not happen if he sits on the Man City bench for the next six months.
He would be a great addition to St James’ Park, but a deal looks increasingly doubtful. It makes little financial sense, and a short-term bargain could have long-term consequences.
The most unexpected fact is that Phillips is still at Manchester City. It is obvious that he needs to leave, but the Telegraph claims that he has not sought to leave. This has allowed Manchester City to keep to their expectations, which is why Newcastle has taken a step back.
McCoist is correct: Phillips simply needs to move away and play, whether it’s for Newcastle, Crystal Palace, Real Madrid, or Blyth Spartans.
