Sven Botman

Newcastle United are trying to strengthen their defensive ranks to assist Sven Botman after pursuing an experienced title winner in January.

Beyond the starting options of Fabian Schar and Botman, Newcastle does not have much depth in case one of them is injured.

According to a fresh Calcio Mercato report, Newcastle are interested in signing Lazio centre-back Alessio Romagnoli, who won Serie A with AC Milan just 18 months ago.

Newcastle wants support for Botman.

Although Schar joined Newcastle when Botman suffered a knee injury that sidelined him for three months, the club does not have another left-sided centre-back, which may be so essential in the Premier League.

Newcastle have already seen what can happen if you don’t prepare for the worst by ensuring your team has enough depth, therefore this will be a major factor in the summer.

It remains to be seen whether they will be able to persuade Romagnoli, who has had a ‘dominating’ first season in Rome, but they are certainly fans.

The 29-year-old’s contract runs until 2027, so there is no clear need for the Italians to sell, but if Romagnoli wants to transfer to England, where he has a lot of suitors, he may force a deal through.

Newcastle’s interest in Serie A players is increasing.

Newcastle were often warned how difficult the Premier League can be for Serie A players making the switch, but Tonali got off to a good start, scoring in his debut game against Aston Villa.

Newcastle are very clearly interested in the Italian market with a number of their recent transfer targets plying their trade over in Europe.

Newcastle have recently expressed an interest in players such as Joshua Zirkzee, Matias Soule, Ederson, and Paulo Dybala, all of whom are performing well in Italy.

Newcastle’s recruitment team has clearly discovered something about the league that they love and believe will translate well, and Eddie Howe will be hoping they are correct.
