Wigan Athletic has been shocked as vice captain Callum Lang requested to quit, according to Wigan Today.
Wigan Athletic are currently 11th in the League One table. Shaun Maloney’s side is undefeated in five League One games and appears to be in an excellent position to finish the season strong after a rough start.
Due to circumstances beyond the control of the coaches and players, the Tics began the season with a point deduction. They did a terrific job navigating that and laying a solid basis for next season.

Lang, 25, has made 25 League One appearances for Wigan Athletic this season. So far, the winger has two goals and two assists, failing to replicate his form from the 2021/22 season, when he scored 15 goals and assisted ten times in 42 League One appearances.

However, Wigan Today is stating that Lang has wanted to quit the club. Maloney said:

“But he wants to go to another club.” We have discussed it, therefore we will have to wait for the matter to be handled.

“I have nothing negative to say about Callum.” He’s a fantastic lad who came through our Academy, performed admirably for me last year, and played even when he wasn’t paid.

Finding a solution

There are eight days left in the January transfer window, and it appears that both parties want this one done before next Thursday. Rotherham United, Derby County, and Portsmouth have all been keeping an eye on him this month.

Lang has a lengthy history of playing at the DW Stadium. His efforts will be remembered warmly, but the time has come to part ways, and Lang will be aiming to exploit his extensive Football League experience to secure a nice move this month.

Maloney’s side will be losing a good asset to have, but Lang isn’t irreplaceable. It remains to be seen whether they will target another forward man to replace him in the next week, but regardless, this shouldn’t derail their season too much.

Wigan Athletic will be looking to finish strong this year. They will then have the opportunity to rebuild and strengthen throughout the summer before aiming for the top six the following season.

The Tics’ next game comes at home against Stevenage Town this Saturday.
