Alan Shearer, the Newcastle United star, has unveiled his Premier League team of the week, which, unsurprisingly, features no Toon players.
Shearer’s team follows Newcastle United’s 4–4 draw with Luton Town. It was an exciting encounter for the spectators, but agonizing for those inside St James’ Park.
The Magpies were significantly below par, which was surprising given their performance away to Aston Villa two days before.
In the end, Eddie Howe’s team had to come back from two goals behind to get a point, but they wanted all three.
However, Luton did an excellent job of neutralizing Newcastle, who had Chiedozie Ogbene flying down the wing. He made Dan Burn’s afternoon, and the Hatters’ number seven has been named to Shearer’s squad of the week.
Alan Shearer says Dan Burn ‘couldn’t cope’ against Luton
Shearer included Ogbene in his team of the week for the Premier League’s official website, complimenting him for causing Burn so much trouble.
“Dan Burn just couldn’t cope with the wing-back’s speed down Luton’s right flank,” he stated in an email.
Shearer also selected Ross Barkley in his lineup. He performed admirably on Saturday, as did Ogbene.
Horrible afternoon for Newcastle defender
It was difficult to see Burn compete against Ogbene. The 31-year-old struggled to keep up with the quick winger, who often outpaced Burn. It was relentless, and Burn ultimately conceded a penalty.
Soon after, Toon fans began calling for Tino Livramento to perform. They eventually got what they wanted, but supporters will question why it didn’t happen sooner.
Eddie Howe stated that he kept Burn on for so long because of his height defending set pieces, which is understandable given Luton’s strength and physicality. However, his presence hampered us in other ways, and he should have been replaced by Livramento far earlier.
He couldn’t adapt, but he’s not the only defender to struggle against Ogbene this season. His speed is frightening.
