According to The Mail, Newcastle United are considering former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards and Bournemouth’s Richard Hughes, as Dan Ashworth appears to be heading to Manchester United.
The Magpies are still waiting for a formal approach, but the two Uniteds are set to reach an agreement, with Fabrizio Romano stating today that Ashworth has ‘already said yes’ to the Red Devils.
Edwards is one of the most sought-after players in sport, but he has been out of the game since leaving the Kop to launch an advising firm with former Liverpool director of research Ian Graham. It’s unknown whether he’d accept the post on Tyneside after declining many offers since leaving the Reds.
Richard Hughes, who is currently the technical director at Bournemouth, is another possibility to succeed Ashworth.
Liverpool are interested in signing the former Cherries defensive midfielder to fill a similar position. But Hughes may prefer a move to Tyneside because of the deep bond he formed with Howe during their time on the south coast.
Another figure to keep an eye on is Phil Giles, a boyhood Newcastle fan who has done an excellent job at Brentford. He is not included in Craig Hope’s article.
