Bruno Guimaraes has avoided suspension for Newcastle United’s match against Arsenal on Saturday, but he is still facing a two-match ban.
Arsenal are likely to pursue Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes this Saturday (8pm kick-off) as he serves a two-match Premier League suspension.
The Brazilian has received nine yellow cards in the Premier League this season and is one booking away from a two-match ban. Guimaraes has avoided a booking in Newcastle’s previous four league games after receiving his tenth yellow card in a 3-2 loss to Manchester City last month.
Guimaraes was also booked in the reverse encounter against Arsenal at St James’ Park, which The Magpies won 1-0. However, some claimed the 26-year-old was fortunate to remain on the field after his arm collided with the back of Jorginho’s head as he sprinted past the Arsenal midfielder.
However, Guimaraes has maintained his discipline in recent matches despite the prospect of a ban.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe remarked, “I think he’s handled [the threat of suspension] really well so far and has been his usual self.”
“He hasn’t appeared to be mindful of it while playing, which I don’t believe is possible. He played with discipline and did an excellent job for the team.”
Anthony Gordon is now facing a two-game suspension after receiving his ninth booking of the season for a stoppage-time foul in a 3-1 win over Aston Villa last month. The 23-year-old scored the winner in Newcastle’s last game against Arsenal and was also booked.
The Magpies duo were already suspended for one match earlier this season after receiving five yellow cards in Newcastle’s opening 19 Premier League games. Kieran Trippier was also given such a suspension.
Newcastle has already played 25 Premier League games, and the suspension threshold has been reduced to 10 yellow cards with a 32-match cut-off. As a result, any player who receives 10 yellow cards between now and a club’s 32nd match of the Premier League season will be suspended for two matches.
As a result, Guimaraes must avoid picking up another card in each of Newcastle’s next seven league games or face a two-game suspension, while Gordon must avoid another two bookings during the same period.
