Wolves may have advanced to the FA Cup quarter-finals last night with a 1-0 victory over Brighton, but they’ve lost another crucial man to injury ahead of Saturday’s trip to St James’ Park.
Hwang Hee-chan, the top scorer, suffered a hamstring injury in the second half and appears to be out, with Gary O’Neil noting in his post-match news conference that he’d “be amazed if he plays at the weekend”. The Korean has scored four goals in five games versus Newcastle.
Not only will he be gone, but joint top scorer Matheus Cunha is still out with a hamstring injury, leaving the visitors without two players who have combined for 22 goals this season.
Midfielder Mario Lemina also had a knock last night, but O’Neill believes the ‘kick’ will’settle down’ in time for their trip to St James’ Park.
“Mario is okay; it was a kick. It should settle down. Channy’s is disappointing because this game should have taken place over the weekend. He felt something in his hamstring, but it was tiny compared to Neto or Cunha. I’d be astonished if he played over the weekend.”
Wolves have been in terrific away form, winning four and drawing two of their last six games. Their most recent away game was a 2-1 victory against Tottenham, but Hwang and Cunha may leave them short on attacking goals. Hopefully, we can capitalise, especially now that Isak, Barnes, Willock, and Anderson are all fit.
