On Tuesday night, Ipswich Town defeated Bristol City 3-2 at Portman Road after coming from behind twice.
Ipswich Town won the Championship for the sixth time in a row on Tuesday night, defeating Liam Manning’s Bristol City. However, they had to battle hard for the three points after falling behind twice on the night.
After a dreary first half with no goals, the game came to life in the second quarter. Anis Mehmeti put the visitors ahead, but substitute Ali Al Hamadi equalized shortly after the hour mark.
However, with 77 minutes on the clock, Tommy Conway scored with his first touch to put Bristol City ahead again. Ipswich Town, however, responded quickly, equalising three minutes later through Conor Chaplin.
The hosts appeared to have squandered their chance to take all three points when Ali Ali Hamadi’s poor penalty was saved on 86 minutes, but they would get another chance to seal the victory. Despite Rob Dickie’s best efforts to knock the ball off the line, left-back Leif Davis scored on 89 minutes.
It was a significant win for Kieran McKenna’s team, as closest rivals Leeds United and Leicester City also won, and match-winner Davis was the clear standout of the night.
He set up the first two before hammering home the winner, earning a 10/10 from reporter Alex Jones. Jones, writing for the EADT, said the following of Davis’ display:
“Two assists and one goal. This was the swashbuckling left-back at his very finest. He admitted after the game that he made a mistake for the second goal, although it’s difficult to fault him given the defending in the center. Aside from that, everything else is OK.”
A standout performance
Davis has been one of Ipswich Town’s top performers this season, but the match against Bristol City showcased him at his most influential. His first goal of the season arrived just in time for the Tractor Boys to keep pace with Leicester and Leeds.
As a result, McKenna’s side remains second in the Championship table, three points behind the Foxes and two ahead of the Whites with only eight games remaining in the season.
Davis’s future performances will ensure that he continues to play an important role in Ipswich Town’s promotion pursuit. It will also keep him on the radar of other clubs, including Newcastle United and West Ham, who have also expressed interest in the 24-year-old sensation.
