Flynn Downes, who is owned by West Ham United, is on loan at Southampton this season.
Flynn Downes has been in excellent form for Southampton during his loan term from West Ham, and Saints manager Russell Martin has praised the midfielder as ‘amazing’.
Hammers manager David Moyes clearly did not see a place for the former Swansea City player in his midfield this season.
That is understandable; I’m not sure if Downes is cut out to play at the highest level of English football.
However, I don’t understand why we let him go on loan last summer just to sign Kalvin Phillips, another defensive midfielder, till the end of the season in January.
What’s done is done, and it appears he may be finished at the London Stadium…
Flynn Downes West Ham future assessed
According to Claret and Hugh, Downes is surplus to requirements at the London Stadium, and West Ham are eager to offload the 25-year-old when the summer transfer window opens.
That does not surprise me at all. I don’t mind Downes as a player, but his inability to make progressive, line-breaking passes means he’ll never make an impact for a top-ten Premier League team.
In fact, he made only 43 progressive passes for West Ham throughout all competitions last season (FBREF).
The midfielder is certainly a very good Championship player, and he could probably do well for a bottom-half Premier League club as well.
Flynn Downes seemed to be enjoying his time at Southampton, therefore I believe he will join them permanently in the summer after leaving West Ham.
It’s unfortunate that things didn’t work out for the boyhood Hammers fan at the London Stadium, but I’m confident he’ll find success somewhere if he leaves the club this summer.
