Dwight Gayle has struggled ever since leaving Newcastle United.

In reality, it was even more difficult for him at St James’ Park following his heroics under Rafa Benitez during the Championship-winning campaign of 2016-17.

Dwight Gayle scored 23 goals for Newcastle that season after joining for £10 million, but just 11 more in 88 appearances in all competitions after promotion.

Gayle announced his permanent departure from Newcastle in the summer of 2022. He signed a two-year contract with Stoke City, and it appeared to be a brilliant decision.

He had established himself to be a top goalscorer in the Championship, so Stoke likely thought they had struck gold by signing a former Newcastle number nine.

However, this did not prove to be the case. Gayle appeared 50 times in all competitions for the Potters, scoring three goals.

The attacker was released by Stoke City last month and has now joined Derby County in League One.

Fortunately, Gayle is now looking back to his best.

The 34-year-old has had a promising start at Derby County. He has made five appearances with the Rams and scored three goals.

In fact, he has three goals in his previous three games, the most recent being in Tuesday night’s 2-1 victory over Reading.

Gayle headed to Instagram after the game to celebrate his third consecutive win for his new team.

Isaac Hayden, a former Newcastle teammate, responded by saying, “On fire.”

The striker is clearly on fire, and it’s nice to see him hitting goals again. Gayle has had a difficult few years, but his move to League One is already yielding positive results.

Gayle is back doing what he does best: scoring goals, and long may this continue.
