“He is an exceptional holding midfielder,” Guardiola told journalists. “He is aggressive, with the ball or without the ball.”He’s aggressive at set pieces and has developed into a true holding midfielder since his time at Lyon and now at a team that wants to see him progress. I’m confident he’ll be involved in the project for the next several years. Definitely.”

Guimaraes’ new deal includes a sizable release clause, which is meant to keep City and other European suitors away from the former Lyon player. The star is already settled in Tyneside, having welcomed his second kid last weekend.

“I am enjoying it here a lot – I have never felt so loved at a club before,” Guimaraes remarked last month. “It’s wonderful how much the fans love me; I adore them as well. But this season has been a mixed bag for me. “I want more wins and to get the club back into Europe.”
