Anthony Gordon made his England debut against Brazil at Wembley Stadium, where they lost 1-0.
Anthony Gordon reflected on “the best day” of his life after making his England debut against Brazil.
The 23-year-old has previously played for the Three Lions at junior level, but earned his senior debut in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat. A late goal from Real Madrid-bound Endrick ended any post-match celebrations, but Gordon was still filled with pride at the final whistle.
In truth, the Newcastle United winger was one of England’s bright spots in an otherwise disappointing Wembley performance. The five-time World Cup winners, led by Bruno Guimaraes in midfield, edged out Gareth Southgate’s side to deliver a wake-up call before Euro 2024.
Gordon gave a decent account of himself, giving the Three Lions coach enough to think about. England will regroup and face Belgium, who are rated fourth in the FIFA standings, on Tuesday.
Speaking to the BBC after the game, Toon talisman Gordon reflected on his younger days, with his ambition of playing for England now a reality. He stated, “Tonight was by far the best day of my life.” I had envisioned it differently, with a goal and a win, but I can’t expect too much.
“I’ve had this long-term dream for as long as I can remember. Four to five years of age. To achieving it means everything to me.
“I haven’t only imagined you as a professional sprinting about my garden replicating Rooney and Gerrard’s goals over the last few years. “It’s an incredible moment for me.”
