Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak has replied to reports connecting him with a move away from the club.
Alexander Isak, Newcastle United’s record signing, stated ‘anything can happen’ in reaction to transfer speculation.
The 24-year-old forward has been in excellent form for Newcastle since his £63 million transfer from Real Sociedad in August 2022. The Swedish international has 26 goals in 57 games, 44 of which were starts.
Isak’s performances for Newcastle have piqued the interest of several big clubs, including Premier League leaders Arsenal. Newcastle’s requirement to comply with the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules has placed doubt on the long-term prospects of their most expensive players, namely Isak and Bruno Guimaraes.
However, the club is determined to keep the players in the forthcoming transfer window, despite Isak admitting ‘things can happen’ when asked about transfer speculation.
“It doesn’t affect me that much,” he told Swedish outlet Expressen while on international assignment. “It has been discussed numerous times and in multiple windows.
“I view it as such a thing. Everyone knows that summer is approaching, and if things show up, anything can happen, but I haven’t even considered it.”
While Isak has had an eye-catching tenure at Newcastle over the last two seasons, he has been sidelined by a series of injuries. Last season, the striker was sidelined from September to January due to a thigh injury, and this season, he has been dealing with a reoccurring groin issue.
“It has actually been difficult,” Isak said. “You have had a setback precisely because it has been tough to get into your flow or because you have just recently done so. It’s almost nicer to know you’ll be gone for a while than these minor inconveniences.
“You go through rehab, and then you get wounded again. It has been a bit difficult. Now that I’m well and feeling good, I hope to stay that way.
“I’ve been having groin issues that seem to be repeating. The team’s current circumstances has also hampered player availability.
“Many times, I’ve returned from an injury and had to play three games in a week, some for 90 minutes, which is not ideal. But we’ve also had some key games.”
