Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has stated that star striker Alexander Isak is not for sale this summer, despite being linked with a move to Arsenal.

Isak excelled in his team’s thrilling 4-3 victory over West Ham, scoring twice from the penalty spot and setting up the first of Harvey Barnes’ late brace.

Despite an injury-plagued season, the 24-year-old has scored 14 Premier League goals and has piqued the interest of numerous major teams, most notably league rival Arsenal.

Newcastle failed to sign new players in January due to Financial Fair Play constraints, but Howe was keen to dismiss any speculation that the Swedish striker will move in the summer to raise funds for their summer recruits.

‘He’s an exceptional player, and no one associated with Newcastle would want to lose him,’ Howe stated.

‘I thought he was fantastic against West Ham. He did not score in open play, but his two penalties were superb, and his overall play was excellent. His link play, his athleticism, he looked in great shape.

While the Magpies may be unwilling to let go of Isak, who recently stated that he was unconcerned about the mounting transfer rumours, several other key players will be pursued.

Bruno Guimaraes, who has a £100 million release clause, has sparked interest from both Manchester United and Manchester City, while Joelinton and Callum Wilson’s contracts expire at the end of next season.

For the time being, Howe’s primary goal is to secure European football for the second consecutive season. After defeating West Ham on Saturday, his team is currently only one point behind the Hammers with a game in hand.

‘There was always the sense that the season was still alive, but you have to win games, and the more you lose, the faster the season fades,’ the Englishman remarked.

‘I always say that the team is formed up of the players’ personalities, and you could see it coming through against West Ham because, without it, I believe we would have been dead and buried.

‘We would not have returned in the manner that we did. The spirit is still present, and that is more important than anything else. “If you have spirit, you have a chance.”
