The latest Coventry City news comes after Manchester United winger Antony was widely condemned for his celebrations towards Sky Blues teammates in the FA Cup semi-finals on Sunday.
Antony claims that his celebration for Coventry City’s players on Sunday was motivated by a Sky Blues player’s “not nice” conduct of Manchester United fans.
The Brazilian winger has faced much criticism for abusing Coventry’s players moments after Rasmus Hojlund scored the winning penalty against Mark Robins’ side. Coventry battled back from 3-0 down to draw the game before losing on penalties after extra time.
A photo has recently surfaced on social media, claiming to show Haji Wright mocking United fans after scoring his penalty in the shootout. And Antony claimed to suggest this was the reason for his anger after citing how United fans were handled by “their player.”
“Coventry proved why they reached the semi-final,” Antony said on X, formerly known as Twitter. “We sought this berth in the final for our fans, and we succeeded. Our fans were not treated well by their player, and I, in the heat of the moment, replied to the provocations in a natural defense of my club!”
United manager Erik ten Hag has since described the reaction to his team’s hard-fought victory over Coventry as “embarrassing” and “a disgrace.”
“Football is about results,” he declared on Tuesday. “We got to the final and deserved it. We lost control for 20 minutes and were lucky to make it to the final. That is a great accomplishment.
“The reaction of you [the media] was embarrassing. Twice [two FA Cup finals] in two years is fantastic. For me as manager, four cup finals in four years. The remarks are disgraceful.
