Anthony Gordon has been a revelation for Newcastle United this season and is poised for a Euro 2024 call-up.
Roy Keane brought up Newcastle United’s trophy drought when discussing Anthony Gordon’s lofty career goals.
Toon chiefs paid £40 million to sign the winger from Everton 16 months ago. Gordon’s first few months were disappointing, but as he adjusted to his new circumstances, the 23-year-old became a Premier League powerhouse.
Gordon’s remarkable 20 goals in all competitions earned him an England call-up, where he staked his claim for a Euro 2024 spot. The attacker is also expected to win Newcastle’s Player of the Season award for his outstanding performance in 2023-24.
Gordon told former Manchester United captain Gary Neville on The Overlap that he uses imagery and meditation techniques to improve his playing. The admission surprised fans accustomed to the Toon star’s combative on-field approach.
Arsenal veteran Ian Wright was amazed by Gordon’s determination to reach the top. He stated, “Anthony Gordon is doing something else to propel himself to the next level. This is what I enjoy about him. He knew he had to move to Newcastle as soon as the offer came in.
“If you look at Everton’s future, he made the right decision. He is on that path (to success), and he has seen it.
However, ex-Sunderland manager Keen refused to get carried away, mocking Newcastle’s empty trophy cupboard. Gordon had told Neville about his professional goals, which included ending the Magpies’ painful wait for silverware.
“He’s going to a club that have won nothing for 50 years, f****** hell,” he said.
