Eddie Howe is the bookmakers’ favourite to succeed Gareth Southgate as England’s manager.
Garth Crooks, a former Tottenham Hotspur and Stoke City striker, believes Eddie Howe would succeed Gareth Southgate if England fails to win Euro 2024.

The Three Lions are among the favourites to win triumph in Germany this summer, ending a 58-year drought without a trophy. Southgate has a plethora of attacking skill at his disposal, but questions about the defence remain.

Many expect England’s manager, who has been in charge for eight years, to step down regardless of how his team performs. There were suspicions that Southgate, who was out of contract after the tournament, would depart after last season’s World Cup.

Many bookmakers have Howe as the front-runner because to his recent success at Newcastle United. Despite the fact that the majority of the squad was on Tyneside before to the Saudi-backed takeover, the 46-year-old has transformed the Magpies from relegation fodder to a European outfit.

Speaking in 2022, Howe distanced himself from the running in the immediate term, but refused to rule out a future England role. Crooks, a BBC pundit, has told fans to “watch this space” if the Three Lions fail in Germany.

“Had the Blades taken their chances at St James’ Park they might still have a chance to stay in the division,” he stated in an email. “However, they lost their nerve as opportunities arose, and with them their belief in their potential to win this match.

“Once Newcastle took the lead, it was game over. Next season will be a watershed moment for Eddie Howe and the Magpies. Newcastle will not be in the Champions League, but they have proven themselves capable of competing against the best.

“However, if England does not win the Euros with one of the best squads in recent years, Howe must be one of the very few English managers who can succeed Gareth Southgate.” Keep an eye on this space.
