Two-time All-Star Ryan Pressly’s current contract has a no-trade clause, but according to a new source, he is likely to waive it, implying that a highly talented reliever who can be both a high-level closer and a setup man could be traded soon.

Despite generating rock-solid stats in 2022 and 2023, as well as 30 or more saves in both seasons, the Houston Astros took the bold but understandable move to sign Josh Hader, the top closer available in free agency this winter. Unfortunately, neither the superstar reliever nor the club performed well in 2024.

The Astros are five games under.500 and in third place in the American League West entering today’s MLB games. They’ve won six consecutive, and there’s hope that this is the start of a comeback to their winning ways. However, if this is just a fluke, many in baseball feel Houston will sell before the July 30 trade deadline.

Ryan Pressly, a 13-year veteran, is an under-the-radar star who could attract major interest. The 35-year-old has shown to be a dependable closer and setup man in critical games, and many competing teams could use someone like him. Earlier this week, New York Post MLB insider Jon Heyman stated that many believe he will seriously “consider waiving his full no-trade for the right team/role.”

With that in mind, let’s look at five teams that will undoubtedly call to inquire about Ryan Pressly’s asking price in the coming weeks.

5 teams that could target Ryan Pressly before the July 30 MLB trade deadline

New York Yankees

The New York Yankees have one of the best records in the league and appear to be a serious title contender despite not yet finding their stride. Clay Holmes has developed into a true closer, and the club has a long history of seeking for outstanding eighth and ninth-inning combinations for playoff runs. While the teams are bitter rivals, New York would put that aside to strengthen their pen with an impact player like Pressly.

Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies are off to a strong start this season and are competing with the Atlanta Braves for the top spot in the National League East. They are a well-rounded club, but their bullpen is weak. Ryan Pressly would be an excellent trade candidate, and he could fill whatever late-inning position the team requires later this season.

Baltimore Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles are a potential title contender in 2024. Craig Kimbrel, the team’s famed closer, has had a disastrous rookie season. If the team is unable to sign one of the top closers available in the coming months, Pressly would be an excellent choice in a closer/setup man platoon alongside Kimbrel.

Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs, like the Phillies, have a well-rounded club, but their bullpen could use a boost. They have a legitimate chance of winning the NL Central this season, and a guy like Pressly might be a significant contributor to their first division crown since 2020.

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers cannot be ruled out of any potential trades this summer. They are 100% committed to capturing a title in 2024, as seen by their significant offseason spending. You can never have enough proven bullpen arms for the playoffs, and Pressly would undoubtedly be willing to ride the blue and white train to a World Series victory in October.
