David Ortiz is open about his dislike for the New York Yankees, so it’s no wonder he took a shot at them when the occasion arose.
On Monday night, the Boston Red Sox legend interviewed Adley Rutschman and Gunnar Henderson of the Baltimore Orioles ahead of the 2024 Home Run Derby, about 24 hours after the Orioles won in a walk-off with an Alex Verdugo error. Ortiz instantly brought it up and couldn’t help but suppress his emotions.
“Then I saw the Yankees lose.” Nothing made me happier than that,” he explained on FOX. “You guys come from behind and whoop them. That made me want to go out for a good meal with a large steak.”
Throughout Ortiz’s conversation with the two Orioles All-Stars, clips of the Yankees’ mistakes throughout the game were aired. The one that cost New York the game, however, came from Verdugo. The former Red Sox outfielder moved in too quickly for a fly ball that went over his head. Verdugo slipped while attempting to turn around, and the Orioles won 6-5.
“I saw it coming my way,” he told reporters after the game. “I took a small step in, and it was enough to defeat me. I was only attempting to make up ground that I had lost on the first step. I was doing everything I could to get to it. I take great satisfaction in my defensive abilities out there. “This one is on me.”
Sunday’s setback was just another reminder of New York’s difficulties, which Ortiz has most likely enjoyed seeing.
