The Miami Dolphins and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa have agreed on a contract extension with an average annual value of $53.1 million.
The Miami Dolphins stated that they intended to finalize a contract extension with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, and they now have. ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported that the team and their 2020 first-round pick had reached an agreement on a four-year, $212.4 million contract extension.
Tagovailoa was taken fifth overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, giving the Dolphins the quarterback they sought for two years. He quickly took over as the team’s starting quarterback, despite dealing with injuries throughout his first four seasons. Tagovailoa was named to his first Pro Bowl last year, after leading the league in passing yards.
In 2022, he led the league in both yards per attempt and passing rating. In the two seasons that Mike McDaniel has been Miami’s head coach, he had a passer rating above 100.
Last season, Tagovailoa threw for 4,624 yards on 69.3 percent completion, 29 touchdowns, 14 interceptions, and a passer rating of 101.1. His yardage, completion percentage, and touchdowns were all career bests.
The new arrangement breaks a mounting story line of the Dolphins and Tagovailoa hitting an impasse on the new contract. Tagovailoa was set to play the 2024 season as the fifth and final year of his rookie contract, with the possibility of the team franchise tagging him before free agency in 2025. He will now stay with the team, with the expectation that he will continue to improve his game and elevate the team over the next few years.
With the acquisition of Tagovailoa, the Dolphins’ front office can now focus on extending safety Jevon Holland, who is set to become a free agency this year, and renegotiating wide receiver Tyreek Hill’s contract.
