The Rockies are sticking to their decision to trade Ryan McMahon at the deadline.
With a 38-65 record, almost every Colorado Rockies player will be available at the MLB trade deadline. Nearly being the keyword, the Rockies have at least one player they have no plans to trade.
According to ESPN’s Jorge Castillo, Colorado has constantly advised parties that third baseman Ryan McMahon is not available for trade. Even with their tough attitude, the Rockies may expect some calls.
McMahon is currently in the middle of his first All-Star season in an eight-year career in Major League Baseball. He’s hitting.270 with 15 home runs, 47 RBI, and three stolen bases. With five more home runs and 13 more RBI, McMahon will have 20+ home runs and 60+ RBI for the fifth consecutive season.
His streak began in his third season in 2019, however the CO-VID-shortened 2020 season threw the records off. Regardless, McMahon has shown to be a reliable danger and an invaluable element of Colorado’s roster.
Along with his offense, McMahon is under team control until the 2028 season after receiving a six-year, $70 million contract deal. While the Rockies’ rebuild has been painstaking, the management is confident that McMahon will handle the hot corner when they are ready to compete again.
Perhaps more losing and NL West bottom-dwelling alters the Rockies’ minds. However, Ryan McMahon is not going anywhere as the 2024 trade deadline approaches.
Ryan McMahon leads’ Rockies offense of the future
Despite playing their home games at Coors Field, Colorado’s offense is ranked middle of the pack in 2024. The Rockies are 16th in runs scored (445), 13th in batting average (.247), and tenth in home runs (115). While not horrible, Colorado will need to raise their game to contend with the likes of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West.
McMahon will be one of the Rockies’ top offensive players. Brenton Doyle, only 26 years old, appears to be another one. Doyle is hitting.279 after 98 games, with 17 home runs, 51 RBI, and 20 stolen bases. If he remains a 20/20 player, Doyle will be the team’s centerfielder for the foreseeable future.
Ezequiel Tovar joins them at shortstop. Only 23 years old, the former top prospect appears to have found his rhythm in 2024, hitting.283 with 17 home runs and 49 RBIs. Tovar will need to cut down on his strikeouts, but the Rockies have given him a lot of leeway in becoming the starting shortstop.
Colorado will need several of their top prospects to succeed once they reach the majors. MLB Pipeline reports that nine of their top ten prospects are hitters. The next generation of Rockies will be asked to bring back the excitement to Coors Field.
It all starts with Ryan McMahon on third base. By the time several of those players are up, he will be an even more experienced leader on the club. Now that McMahon is playing at an All-Star level, Colorado is eager to keep him with the only MLB organization he has ever known.
