This coming season, two strong college football programs will compete in what is perhaps the most difficult conference in the sport: the SEC. The Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns formally joined the SEC on July 1.

The biggest question among fans is whether team is better equipped for year one. Many say it’s Texas, considering the Longhorns are coming off a Big 12 championship and a College Football Playoff participation, whereas Oklahoma has a 16-10 record over the last two years.

ESPN’s Paul Finebaum provided his thoughts on what separates the two clubs. One noteworthy distinction is that the Sooners have a new quarterback, but Texas will have its two-year starter return. Finebaum also believes the Longhorns have more depth at this stage.

“While Oklahoma was good last year, where is their quarterback?” Finebaum asked. “Quite honestly, Texas has one of the best quarterbacks. They have an amazing wide receiver room. They have good defensive players. They have a really talented squad, and I believe Oklahoma is good, but not quite as deep.”

Finebaum further remarked that the schedules for both teams were very different. He noted that Oklahoma’s schedule is “unreal,” whereas Texas’ schedule is demanding but feasible. This is why Finebaum feels Texas will outperform Oklahoma in the SEC’s inaugural season.
