Rara Thomas was just arrested for the second time during his Georgia football career.
The Georgia football team has made a lot of headlines this summer, but not for the right reasons. The Bulldogs have had a significant problem with driving-related concerns in recent years, and while that remains a major issue, the most recent arrest of a Georgia player was for cruelty to children and misdemeanor battery. That Bulldogs player is wide receiver Rara Thomas, who has now been dismissed from the squad.
“Senior receiver Rara Thomas has been dismissed from the Georgia football team in the aftermath of his second arrest in two years for a domestic violence incident,” according to a newspaper article.
Rara Thomas began his college football career at Mississippi State, and his first arrest came shortly after moving to the Georgia football team. After an encounter with his girlfriend in a dorm room, he was arrested on counts of felony false imprisonment and misdemeanor family violence. The charges were ultimately withdrawn.
Thomas’ second arrest happened last Friday. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart met with Thomas shortly after the event and informed him that he could no longer be a member of his team.
“I met with Rara on Tuesday and had a chance to talk to him face to face, which was important, but I informed him that he could no longer be a part of this team, and he understood that,” Kirby Smart recounted.
Rara Thomas’ lawyer also released a statement
Kim Stephens, the lawyer for Rara Thomas, has published a comment on the matter. He believes that everything will be settled after all information is known.
“I am pleased that bond could be set and Mr. Thomas released while we fully investigate the case,” according to the statement. “We expect that this matter can be resolved swiftly and fairly once all facts are known.”
Thomas had a good year in his first and only season with the Georgia football team. He grabbed 23 passes for 383 yards and one touchdown. He had better success at Mississippi State, where he scored at least five touchdowns in each of his two seasons. During his two seasons, he caught 62 receptions for 878 yards and 12 touchdowns.
With all of Georgia football players’ recent legal troubles, many people have questioned Kirby Smart’s leadership. Yes, he has put together a fantastic football squad, but it isn’t worth it if these guys are getting into so much problems off the field. Arrests are one thing, but the graduation rate is exceedingly low.
People were asking what kind of penalties Smart was dishing out, because something was definitely not working. Smart obviously heard the clamor, and he thought it was best for Rara Thomas to leave the squad.
The football season is almost here, with games beginning this month, so Georgia should be able to focus before the new year begins.
