With the St. Louis Cardinals currently in the midst of a postseason run, it is clear that shortstop Masyn Winn has reached a new level at the plate. After suffering in his initial Major League stint last season, Winn has made some significant swing changes. According to St. Louis Post-Dispatch reporter Derrick Goold’s piece, the key alteration is? Attacking each at-bat by “swinging for the fences,” which is a power-focused approach.
“I haven’t been hitting well; it’s frustrating,” Winn admitted during the conversation. “I can’t play football anymore, punch people, and vent my rage. So I’m just trying to hit a baseball.”
Well, the aggressive strategy is clearly paying off. He’s already had 387 at-bats in the majors this season, more than tripling his total from last year. The sophomore shortstop is now hitting.279 with eight home runs and 39 RBIs on the season. He’s also 9-for-13 in stolen bases, and his OPS has risen significantly. All of these developments are excellent news for Winn and the Cardinals.
Cardinals’ regular season may hinge on Masyn Winn
“The past few days, I’m swinging for the fences, no doubt,” Winn said on Saturday. “Just trying to let some emotions out on the plate. I’ve been swinging pretty hard, hoping to hit the ball far.”
If that comment doesn’t perfectly capture Winn’s performance this season, what does? His OPS (.734), slugging percentage (.408), and OBP (.326) have all increased since last season’s 37-game stay, as has his cumulative WAR (3.7). These statistics reflect a much improved line compared to last year. In 2023, the shortstop produced a slash line of.230/.238/.467, which resulted in his ultimate demotion. This version of Winn is an excellent leadoff hitter who serves as the sparkplug for a team that could reach October.
Winn looks to help lead Cardinals’ offensive attack
As the Cardinals’ 2024 regular season nears its end, it’s time for their offense to step up in search of postseason glory. Right fielder Alec Burleson has experienced a similar surge in offensive productivity as Winn, hitting.278 with 19 home runs and 64 RBIs this season. Both figures lead the squad, and the outfielder has seven steals. Brendan Donovan has also improved his game, particularly after securing the starting left field position. He leads the team in hits (109) and on-base percentage (.333).
Veterans Paul Goldschmidt (.234 BA, 17 home runs, and 43 RBIs) and Nolan Arenado (.266 BA, 11 home runs, and 48 RBIs) continue to contribute significantly. So, manager Oli Marmol’s squad includes numerous batters that contribute on a regular basis, as well as a few rising stars. If the Cardinals want to add another World Series trophy at the end of the season, the offense must maintain its recent outstanding performance.
