The Texas Longhorns have a busy recruiting period coming up, with multiple five-star prospects expected to make decisions before the end of the month.

The first candidate from that group to make a selection will be five-star Sasche (TX) wide receiver Kaliq Lockett, who will choose between Texas, Texas A&M, Alabama, LSU, and Florida State on Wednesday.

Ahead of his announcement, Lockett met with On3 recruitment guru Steve Wiltfong to explore his contenders and what he is looking for at the next level.

“Really just an extension of my family,” Lockett told Wiltfong. “I place a high value on family. It is going to be difficult to leave them. I wanted the school to look after and care for me, and I wanted the coaches to be like my parents but not my parents, if you get what I mean. My plan is to finish in three years. The school I picked is the ideal approach to become one of the finest receivers in the country and a first-round pick.”

In other words, Lockett wants to stay near to home and his family while developing into a top-tier NFL WR prospect.

On paper, the Longhorns thrive in all of these areas.

In terms of NFL skill, the Longhorns had three receivers selected in this spring’s NFL Draft – Xavier Worthy, Adonai Mitchell, and Jordan Whittington – and appear to be on track to add more next spring. Austin is just over a three-hour trip from his family’s house.

Lockett sees that in the Horns as well, which could give them an advantage going into his decision on Wednesday.

18 Offers and Counting for Nation's No. 3 WR Kaliq Lockett

“I like Coach Sark’s offensive mastermind style of offense,” Lockett told Wiltfong. “I appreciate Coach Jackson’s viewpoint as an NFL receiving coach transitioning from the NFL to college and applying his NFL experience to college. I enjoy how Texas is a little closer (to home) than everyone else. Also, my past interactions with Texas.”

Lockett is currently ranked as the No. 17 player in the nation and the No. 3 wide receiver in the 2025 class. He has 59 receptions for 1,299 yards and 13 touchdowns as a junior for Sasche last season. In his sophomore season, he recorded 29 catches for 492 yards and five touchdowns, and he earned varsity snaps as a rookie.

According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, Texas is the current favorite to sign Lockett, with an 83.6 percent chance.
