Rumors about Deuce Knight’s decommitment are not new, but they have rarely been so powerful in Notre Dame football.

For months, Notre Dame football fans have been hearing about rumors that quarterback Deuce Knight may leave. Until recently, it appeared that the rumblings were simply the normal recruiting soap opera drama. Things might have altered over the weekend.

Things seemed to change dramatically when the Auburn Tigers entered the scene. The Fighting Irish appeared to be fighting off the Ole Miss Rebels. They appeared to have won that struggle, but now another SEC force is in the game, and the situation has shifted.

According to On3 national recruiting expert Steve Wiltfong, the Tigers won the battle. He issued a Fong Bomb on Monday evening, stating that he expects Knight will go from Notre Dame to Auburn.

“Obviously, we’ve been reporting for a little while now that we think Auburn is the team with the momentum in the Deuce Knight recruitment, and now my On3 RPM reflects that,” Wiltfong told the media. “I think Big Cat Weekend was an excellent experience. And I believe playing in the SEC is an important thing for him.”

The Irish are far from out of contention. Every analyst knows Knight appreciates what Marcus Freeman and Gino Guidugli bring to the table. There is a reason he is constantly promoting the Golden Domers to new recruits.

It is also true that, in the end, he is an SEC kid. He’s a Mississippi native who clearly knows the SEC better than he does the Midwest.

When it comes down to it, South Bend may simply be too far from what he knows. Even if he knows that joining the Notre Dame football team will make him a hero in his new community. The question now is whether Freeman and team can reverse the reversal before December.
