The Cardinals expect to receive pitching reinforcements soon.
Lance Lynn, the St. Louis Cardinals’ starting pitcher, is now on the injured list because of right knee irritation. MLB.com says that the right-handed pitcher recently played catch off the mound and threw a long toss. He is anticipated to return in mid-August, barring any setbacks.
The Cardinals are seven games down of the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central division. St. Louis is also 1.5 games out of the NL Wild Card place. They could use the pitching depth as the final stretch run approaches.
The Cardinals have a talented team that can compete in the postseason. However, their roster is not as extensive as it has been in prior seasons. Making it to the postseason in 2024 will be challenging. Fortunately, the Cardinals have experienced veterans who know what it takes to execute effectively in critical situations.
Lance Lynn, a veteran, can be included in that conversation.
Lance Lynn nearing Cardinals return
The 37-year-old began his MLB career with the Cardinals in 2011. He instantly showed indications of potential, earning his first All-Star selection in 2012. Lynn would throw for St. Louis until 2017. He has also pitched for the Minnesota Twins, the New York Yankees, the Texas Rangers, the Chicago White Sox, and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Lynn returned to St. Louis before the 2024 season, though.
During the 2024 season, the veteran starting pitcher has not been particularly impressive. Nonetheless, he has provided St. Louis some respectable innings. Overall, he has a 4.06 ERA in 106.1 innings pitched.
It is worth noting that Lynn is renowned as a “innings-eater.” This means Lynn is capable of working late into games and protecting the bullpen, which is especially important near the end of the season.
Lynn will play a role in the Cardinals’ postseason campaign if he stays healthy after his return.
