The Los Angeles Dodgers have released utility player Cavan Biggio. Biggio was slated for assignment earlier this week. Biggio, 29, has a variety of options available to him upon his release.

Biggio’s Future

After the Dodgers release him, he can be grabbed off waivers. However, if no team claims him, the Dodgers have the option of sending him to the minors. However, with his more than five years of Major League experience, Biggio can decline this option without forfeiting his compensation. Unfortunately, Biggio struggled in his limited time with the Dodgers. He was slicing.192/.306/.329 for a.635 OPS. If another team claims him off waivers, they will assume the remainder of his 2024 salary. This season, Biggio earns $4.21 million. While it is unclear whether any team will sign him, Biggio is a veteran player with experience.

Despite not playing every day last season, he made offensive and defensive contributions for the Blue Jays. His numbers were in stark contrast to his 2019 numbers, when he hit 16 home runs. Overall, Biggio has been inconsistent, making it tough for a contending team to consider acquiring him. However, the Chicago White Sox and the Miami Marlins are two teams who could be interested in acquiring him. This may also be done over the offseason.

His future is undetermined, and seeing where he goes will be interesting. Could this be it, or will he find a new home where he can be consistent? If he can find a role with the Chicago White Sox, he will undoubtedly receive additional playing time. Many were surprised when the Toronto Blue Jays released Biggio. However, his numbers this season were not on level with the Blue Jays. While it is unlikely that he will return to the minors, given his lack of consistency, this may be an option he should examine to help himself.
