The New York Yankees completed likely the most significant move at the MLB Trade Deadline, acquiring Jazz Chisholm Jr. in a trade with the Miami Marlins. Chisholm was named “the most overrated player in baseball” in an anonymous survey of MLB players conducted by the Athletic before to the trade, but he isn’t letting that bother him.
“What was it, about 11 players? “I definitely knew who they were talking to, too,” Jazz Chisholm Jr. told Fox Sports’ Deesha Thosar. “I didn’t care. Who cares what others have to say about me? If he genuinely voted that I’m overrated, that shows you’ve got something in your head, brother. … Like me, I’m not going out there and voting on who is an overrated player because I have no idea who one is. I don’t look at individuals that closely. I apologize, but I only look at excellent individuals. So you call me overrated? I must be good. That’s how I see it.
When the Yankees acquired Chisholm, there were some concerns about his fit in the clubhouse, but general manager Brian Cashman consulted with people such as Derek Jeter, who was the owner in Miami when Chisholm was there. Jeter gave his seal of approval.
There was considerable locker room controversy with Chisholm and other Marlins veterans, most notably Miguel Rojas, who was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Many fans also believed Chisholm was undeserving of being on the cover of MLB The Show in 2023, which appears to have influenced players’ votes for him as the most overrated.
Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s hot start with Yankees
Chisholm has had a strong few weeks after being traded to the Yankees, batting.296 with a.345 on-base percentage, seven home runs, and a 1.049 OPS, per Baseball Reference. That is significantly above Chisholm’s career averages, and it would be surprising if he maintained that with the Yankees in a larger sample. However, he could see an increase in his power numbers as a result of playing in Yankee Stadium, as his overlays indicate that he would have had more home runs if he had spent the entire season in New York.
Chisholm has also performed admirably at third base since joining the Yankees, a position he had never previously played. It will be intriguing to see how he performs down the stretch this season and in a possible postseason run in the Bronx.
