The former Utah State and Air Force player made his Ole Miss football practice debut on Friday. What exactly will the Rebels get?
Micah Davis, who transferred from Utah State after former head coach Blake Anderson was fired, has joined an already loaded Ole Miss football 2024 team as another offensive weapon.
The 5-11, 185-pound wide receiver from Atlanta made his Ole Miss practice debut on Friday, August 9.
Despite having only three on-field sessions to work with, Davis has already established himself as an All-Mountain West standout this season with his skills as a receiver and special teams weapon. This past season, he caught 36 catches for 628 yards and six touchdowns out wide, while also returning 250 punts on 28 attempts, ranking eighth in the NCAA. He also returned six kickoffs, totaling 83 yards.
For the time being, if something isn’t broken, don’t fix it. Lane Kiffin confirmed his desire to maximize his abilities in numerous ways.
“He’ll have an impact on special teams,” Kiffin said. “He was out there today and had already made many plays. He can play both inside and outside as a receiver. In this regard, he possesses a distinct skill set. We are happy to have him. He provides competition to that room, including someone who made major plays last year.”
Prior to Utah State, Davis played for Air Force, where he gained 594 yards from scrimmage and scored six times. That was before he began his undergraduate career at Iowa Wesern Community undergraduate, when he led the nation with 326 yards on 29 punt returns (11.2 ypr) and received first-team all-conference recognition.
“Haven’t seen too much of (Davis) so far, but he’s an explosive player and a great punt returner from what I’ve seen and from his first couple days of practice,” said teammate Ole Miss wide receiver Cayden Lee.
“I haven’t matched up against him yet, but I see him making that transition,” said Ole Miss defensive back Trey Amos. “As a punt returner, I have seen a few plays. He’ll play a fantastic role with us.”
Along with Davis, the nation’s top JUCO wide receiver Deion Smith is scheduled to join the roster soon. Tre Harris, Jordan Watkins, Antwane Wells, Cayden Lee, Ayden Williams, and other players can be found in the receiver room.
Inside the Rebels will return to the practice field on Tuesday, August 13. Ole Miss football will kick up their highly anticipated 2024 season against Furman on Saturday, August 31, at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled at 6 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN+/SECN+.
“We’re not giving up. “If I had to sum it up, I’d say we’ve had a good start to camp,” Kiffin said of his squad. “We’ve remained relatively healthy. Part of that is what we’ve talked previously with our ‘ramp up’ camp schedule.
