The Astros have signed right-hander Glenn Otto to a minor league contract, the team announced (X link via Chandler Rome of the Athletic). Otto will be placed on the Triple-A disabled list, although he could return later in the season as rotation or long relief depth.
Otto is a Rice product who the Yankees drafted in the fifth round of the 2017 draft. New York included him in the Joey Gallo trade with the Rangers. Otto made his Texas debut in 2021 and spent most of the next season in the rotation. He started 27 games in his first full year, pitching to a 4.64 ERA in 135 2/3 innings. A Spring Training shoulder issue cost him a significant portion of 2023. Otto made six appearances, all in relief, and allowed 12 runs in 10 2/3 innings.
The Rangers designated Otto for assignment following the trade deadline. The Padres claimed him off waivers and kept him on their 40-man roster throughout the winter. Unfortunately, his ’24 campaign has followed a similar pattern to last year’s. Otto hurt the teres major muscle in his shoulder and began the season on the injured list. He made eight Triple-A outings before returning to the IL on July 21. He was dropped off a 40-man roster for the second consecutive year at the deadline. The Friars released him in exchange for reliever Jason Adam, who was acquired from Tampa Bay.
Since injured players cannot be placed on outright waivers, the Padres released Otto following the DFA. He’s clearly not totally recovered, yet he manages to get work with his hometown group. Houston has lacked seasoned non-roster rotation depth all season. Even if Otto’s recent shoulder issues limit him to a relief role this season, he has the potential to be a multi-inning bullpen contributor.
