Ole Miss should have one of the country’s most promising receivers on the practice field today.
Bruce Feldman of The Athletic reports that Deion Smith has been cleared and will practice with the Ole Miss Rebels on Tuesday. Feldman shared the news late Monday night. Ole Miss is scheduled for an evening practice on Tuesday.
Smith is instantly eligible after transferring to Ole Miss from Holmes (Miss.) Community College.
Smith’s presence enhances what many regard as the nation’s best wide receivers room. He will now join teammates Tre Harris, Jordan Wilkins, Juice Wells, and others to form a deadly arsenal for Heisman hopeful Jaxson Dart as quarterback.
Smith’s saga has taken more than seven months to unfold. He signed with the Rebels in December and was anticipated to be in Oxford in early July.
The 6-4, 190-pounder was ranked as the nation’s top junior college player regardless of position by the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Index.
“Smith is a generational talent at the wide receiver position, with all of the skills,” said Shay Hodge, Smith’s coach and trainer. “He stands 6-3, 190 and has the same body type as Justin Jefferson (LSU, Vikings), and most people referred to him as Justin Jefferson 2.0 while at LSU.” The kid checks every box for a prototypical receiver, including speed, quickness, route running, and great hands. He easily gets past opponents yet doesn’t appear to be running because he has such a long stride.”
