The Cincinnati Reds’ pitching staff suffered a setback on Saturday when All-Star starter Hunter Greene was placed on the 15-day injured list with elbow inflammation.
Greene, a right-handed pitcher, has a 9-4 record, a 2.83 ERA, and 162 strikeouts this season.
On Tuesday, he pitched seven innings and surrendered only one run as the Reds defeated the Cardinals 4-1. His injury list placement is retroactive to Wednesday.
“We put him on the IL for precautionary reasons,” stated Cincinnati general manager Nick Krall. “This is elbow discomfort. We’ll get an MRI in the next several days to try to figure it out.
Greene underwent Tommy John surgery in 2019.
“He’s been tremendous this year, and it was a tough conversation to have with him, but he understood,” Krall told me. “We knew he was going to miss at least one start, so this was the best way we could handle it.”
The Reds are still deciding who will take Greene’s planned start on Monday.
