Rumors and speculations have swirled around Notre Dame quarterback commitment Deuce Knight for months, and now the Mississippi athlete has an official visit with the Auburn Tigers scheduled for the Alabama-A&M game on August 31.

No, Knight has not decommitted from the Irish, but it is probably just a formality at this time. For a player who has been committed for nearly a year, this is exactly the type of behavior that results in a flip.

At the moment, both the Ole Miss Rebels and Auburn are vying for Deuce, but the Tigers have all the momentum.

While many Irish fans will curse the skies when the decommitment finally occurs, we should know better. These things happen for a variety of reasons in the year of our Lord 2024.

The main cause, I believe, is wholly Notre Dame’s fault—bbut not one that I wish was different. The explanation is Deuce’s path to playing time. If C.J. Carr is telling the truth, and there are many reasons to believe he is, the starting job will be available in 2027.

Notre Dame QB Deuce Knight: Expert Scout's Analysis

Today’s greatest quarterbacks do not want to sit for two years. You can debate all you want about “a real elite QB wouldn’t be scared of competition,” and so on, but I don’t care. It’s not my problem, and the situation really benefits Notre Dame’s program.

Deuce is about to flip, and Notre Dame will eventually add (or flip) another quarterback to the 2025 class. At the end of the season, a quarterback other than C.J. Carr will transfer, and we’ll be good to go.

The storyline of it all is very bad, but in the end, I’m not sure how much it matters. However, I could be absolutely wrong, and this is simply another in a long line of recruiting “what ifs”.
