In the midst of a difficult rookie season, Astros pitcher Spencer Arrighetti issues a confident warning about his squad.
There is little denying that youngster Spencer Arrighetti has struggled throughout the year, with Houston Astros manager Joe Espada addressing the poor performances. However, instead of allowing seven earned runs against the Kansas City Royals in his first start in April, Arrighetti was nearly faultless Thursday in the Astros’ 6-0 victory against the Baltimore Orioles.

This was his third shutout of the season, and it began slowly with two doubles to Orioles batters, but Arrighetti settled in and was dominant, striking out six in six innings while throwing 94 pitches. He would speak with MLB commentator Ken Rosenthal, and besides discussing the performance, he would add that the “Astros are back.”

“There’s no quit in that whole clubhouse,” Arrighetti said about the team’s ability to overcome challenges. “I mean, there was never a moment of fear; regardless of what the record said or where we were in the division, everyone showed up and worked every day. It’s been a long road to get here. I mean, I had to come a long way, and I know there are other guys who have worked tirelessly to put themselves in a position to help us win more often, and I’m just grateful to the guys in the clubhouse who have helped keep me sane and working as efficiently and hard as I have always. And yes, I think, the Astros are back.”

As previously stated, Arrighetti has had an up-and-down season, with a 4.94 ERA, a 6-11 record, and 140 strikeouts. Rosenthal questioned Arrighetti about the key to his success, and he mentioned adapting to the Orioles and “believing” in what got him into this situation in the first place.

“I think kind of just rolling with it,” Arrighetti added. “That’s a tremendous group on the opposite side of the field tonight. I mean, they’ve demonstrated all year that they punish mistakes, and I made a couple early on, and I feel like I was able to sort of use it and accept it for what it was. I mean, it’s simply an opportunity for me to get some information from that individual and what he wants. And I believe I was able to pitch to their weaknesses a little better after that.”

“I think it’s just keeping believing in what got me here, in my talent, and the pitcher that I know I am, the competitive attitude that I have, and then obviously leaning into the information that the people around me are ready to give me and attempt to educate me. And I believe I’ve been learning quite well on the fly for the most part. I’ve had incredibly high highs and really low lows, and I’m seeking for the middle, which I think I’m getting closer to. So I’m satisfied with it.”
