Brent Honeywell was claimed off waivers by the Dodgers on July 13, and for the remainder of the month, he appeared to be one of the best things to happen to LA at the right time. He pitched 9 2/3 innings without allowing a run in his Dodgers debut on July 20 (despite arriving in Detroit only 13 hours before). He struggled a little in his last July start, but he still finished with a 0.71 ERA in his first two weeks with the Dodgers.

His first appearance in August wasn’t as smooth; he allowed eight hits and three runs over 3 2/3 innings, including two home runs in the eighth. On August 18, the Dodgers designated him for assignment after allowing a solo home run to Nolan Arenado in the Cardinals’ 5-2 victory.

In the same transaction, LA called up Ben Casparius, but he did not make his MLB debut before Blake Treinen was activated, therefore Casparius was sent to the minors.

Honeywell cleared waivers and accepted a reassignment to Triple-A rather than becoming a free agent, which may be good news for the Dodgers if their bullpen continues to suffer injuries.

If the Dodgers find themselves in a shaky situation for the rest of the season, Honeywell will undoubtedly be among the first to be called up. LA has recovered the majority of their injured bullpen arms, leaving only Brusdar Graterol and Connor Brogdon, who is presently undergoing a rehab assignment, on the roster. However, the Dodgers’ track record of keeping healthy this season has been less than ideal. Honeywell may be back in the majors in as little as ten days on the injured list.

For the sake of the Dodgers, let us hope this does not happen. Brogdon just pitched one inning for Los Angeles this season before getting hurt, during which he gave up two home runs, so there hasn’t been much reason to miss him. When Graterol returns to the majors, the Dodgers will finally have a full, healthy, and potentially deadly bullpen.

If Honeywell can keep grinding in the minors, he has a good chance of receiving a spring training invite and competing for a roster position next season. However, if the Dodgers are unlucky enough to lose another arm, Honeywell is a viable backup option.
