The New York Yankees signed Juan Soto this offseason knowing they could lose him in MLB free agency, where he would face competition from a large number of teams. As the offseason approaches, there may not be as much competition as anticipated.

Soto will only be 26 years old next season, but he has already established himself as a perennial MVP candidate, with his output expected to increase further in 2024. He’s been a terrific fit in the Yankees lineup with Aaron Judge, and his best tools point to long-term success over the next decade.

That’s why he’s expected to have a strong market this summer. While several teams have already been connected to the All-Star outfielder in MLB speculations, it looks that certain big-name organizations will not be heavily involved.

Jeff Passan, ESPN’s senior MLB writer, presented an early glimpse of MLB free agency 2025. Looking ahead, Passan mentioned a couple big-market teams that are unlikely to actively pursue Soto this offseason.

“In Soto’s case, the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs and both Los Angeles teams could likely afford him but are long shots to make a real push. Seattle could use him but will be scared off by the money.”

Soto will become one of the highest-paid MLB players in history when he signs his next contract. Negotiations with teams are expected to last 10 or more seasons, with a total worth of more than $500 million. There’s even a chance he’ll land a $600 million contract.

If the Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, and Chicago Cubs become actively involved in a bidding battle for Soto, his options will decrease significantly. Currently, the Yankees and New York Mets are regarded as the overwhelming favorites for him.

The San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays are two potential darkhorse teams to keep an eye on, as quiet teams are usually present. For the time being, the prevailing expectation is that Soto will sign with either the Yankees or the Mets.
