Lane Kiffin has the Ole Miss Rebels playing incredibly well. The club has completed its first 11-plus win season and is now 3-0, ranked fifth in the country.
The No. 5 rating is the highest since Hugh Freeze’s tenure as head coach in 2015. Questions remain regarding whether Kiffin would consider becoming a head coach elsewhere. One of the positions to which his name has been attached is that of head coach for the Florida Gators, should it become vacant.
A caller on “The Paul Finebaum Show” questioned why Kiffin would be interested in the Florida job, which he referred to as a “dumpster fire.” Finebaum explained that Kiffin has previously been drawn to hard situations. “Lane’s been known to be attracted to dumpster fires in the past,” Finebaum told me.
It’s unclear what job Finebaum is referring about. Kiffin’s first college head coaching job was at Tennessee. The Volunteers were coming off a 5-7 season when he took over, but they had won 10 games the previous year. So it’s probably not that one. It’s most likely either the USC or Florida Atlantic job. Kiffin took over USC after the university faced fines that included a bowl suspension and scholarship losses. Florida Atlantic, on the other side, had been winless for eight straight seasons. By his second season, he had won ten or more games in both locations. If the Florida job becomes available, he may be the right person to turn things around if he chooses to do so.
