Consider a timetable in which Urban Meyer coached Notre Dame football…

Urban Meyer, a former college football coach who won two National Championships at Florida and one at Ohio State, is considered one of the best to ever grace the sideline. Fans of the sport may be surprised to learn that the Ohio native might have coached Notre Dame football.

Meyer commented on the situation via The Triple Option.
“You know, I was offered both the Notre Dame and Florida jobs, and I’m an Irish Catholic who adores Notre Dame.” Meyer admitted, “I’d go there in a minute.” “But the reason I took Florida, and not many people notice, is because I had young kids at the time.”

While it is admirable for a man to prioritize his family, it also demonstrates Florida’s football talent. Meyer didn’t have to look far outside of Gainesville for top recruits.

“When you recruit for Notre Dame, you recruit Los Angeles, Phoenix, Dallas, New Jersey, New York, Memphis, and Florida,” Meyer explained. “You know where you recruit when you’re in Florida? You got a King Air and you got a Citation at your disposal. I was home virtually every night because you recruit Tampa, Miami, Polk County, and go up to Georgia, but you are home. Florida’s got it all right there.”

Meyer left Utah for Florida in 2005, and the Fighting Irish pivoted to Charlie Weis after Meyer turned them down. While Weis led the club to Sugar, Fiesta, and Hawaii Bowl berths, he never achieved Meyer’s level of success.

While Meyer’s coaching career is now in the rearview mirror, is there any chance he will return to the sideline?

Urban Meyer Gives Clear Stance on Potential Return to University of Florida

Urban Meyer is unlikely to coach Notre Dame football or anyone else

“That ship has sailed,” Meyer explained. “I want that program to succeed so badly. I knew so many individuals there, and we dedicated a large portion of our lives to that program. But the ship has sailed.”

Current Gators head coach Billy Napier is on the hot seat, but if he is dismissed, they will most likely hire a fresh candidate.
