Grayson Rodriguez will not pitch again this season, adding to the Baltimore Orioles’ injury woes as they prepare for the postseason.

Rodriguez, the team’s No. 2 starter, has been sidelined since early August due to right lat soreness. Even last week, the Orioles were expecting to have him back by October. However, manager Brandon Hyde announced Wednesday that the right-hander is being shut down and would miss the postseason.

“He was progressing well,” Hyde said at Yankee Stadium. “It’s usually a slow-healing injury, and getting him back in time for the playoffs was going to be a little rushed. We just believed that was the proper thing to do for his health and future.”

Rodriguez went 13-4 with a 3.86 ERA in 20 starts during his second major league season. In 116 2/3 innings, he struck out 130 opponents while walking 36 others.

“That is a loss. “We’ve missed him,” Hyde explained.

Rodriguez, a highly touted prospect when he debuted in the majors last year, is 20-8 with a 4.11 ERA in 43 career starts.
