Jazz Chisholm has apologized for sending the most random stray at the Los Angeles Angels.
Chisholm and the New York Yankees won Game 1 of the ALDS against the Kansas City Royals on Saturday. Yankees outfielder Alex Verdugo’s RBI single broke a 5-5 tie in the seventh inning, propelling the Yankees to a 6-5 victory.
After the game, Chisholm was asked about Verdugo’s performance and answered with a [checks notes] swipe at the Angels.
“He lives for this,” Chisholm remarked about Verdugo. “He’s performed in major cities previously. He played in Boston and Los Angeles, and I’m not talking about the Angels, you understand?
Chisholm’s statements drew significant criticism from Angels supporters, particularly because the Angels are currently sitting at home thousands of miles away, minding their own business. As a result, Chisholm posted a “my bad” on his X page on Sunday.
“I did not mean to offend you Angels fans,” Chisholm wrote. “Sorry #lovedisney.”
The former All-Star Chisholm was probably just trying to be amusing when he mentioned Verdugo’s previous playoff appearances (with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Boston Red Sox). While Chisholm is right that the Angels have not made the playoffs since 2014 (the longest active postseason drought in MLB), it was perhaps unnecessary to mention them.
Chisholm is a relative newcomer to playoff baseball, having played only four postseason games in his career. But Chisholm and the Yankees clearly had luck on their side in Game 1, as it appears like they capitalized on a poor call to win the game.
