The Atlanta Braves advanced to the postseason on the last day of a doubleheader against the New York Mets. However, they were decisively defeated in the Wild Card Series by the San Diego Padres, who swept them in two games. With that, the Braves have a lot of questions to answer this offseason.

Yes, the Braves were severely impacted by the injury bug. However, their rivals, the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets, are likely to spend heavily in free agency since they are both interested in Juan Soto. Not to mention that the Braves may need to fill a vacancy in the starting rotation with Max Fried about to enter free agency.

If the Braves were to watch Fried leave in free agency and join with another team, who could they possibly replace him with? Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer has named the most likely players to be dealt by each team this offseason, including Sonny Gray of the St. Louis Cardinals. That’s not surprising, given that the Cardinals are expected to trade him this offseason. Rymer, on the other hand, believes the Braves could be a good fit.

So, what does it take for the Braves to get Gray?

If the Cardinals want a reasonable return, they will have to absorb some of Gray’s deal. Rymer raises exactly this point.

“This comes only a year after he signed a three-year, $75 million contract with the Cardinals, but it was under a different leadership structure and before the 34-year-old had an up-and-down season that included time on the disabled list.

“The only question is what the Cardinals hope to accomplish by trading Gray. They might just wish to terminate his contract. However, if they want talent back, they will probably have to eat some of it.

So, what does a trade look like?
