The Baltimore Orioles are entering a critical offseason. Over the previous few years, they have gradually developed a superteam, mostly by building a youthful core of stars. But, for the first time in this rebuild, Baltimore must re-sign several key free agents this winter. Corbin Burnes, Baltimore’s ace, is the top free agent who is expected to leave. Burnes is coming off a fantastic year in his one season with the Orioles. This winter, the right-hander is likely to receive a lot of attention from a variety of organizations.
According to Zachary Rymer of Bleacher Report, the Orioles will be unable to re-sign their ace this winter, and Burnes is expected to sign with the New York Mets on a seven-year, $210 million contract.
“It won’t be through the qualifying offer, but Burnes’ return to the Orioles cannot be ruled out. Passan includes them, the (San Francisco) Giants, and the (Toronto) Blue Jays, as well as the (New York) Yankees and Red Sox, according to Heyman and Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe,” Rymer added. “The Mets are a more speculative possibility, albeit a clear one. Former Milwaukee Brewers general manager David Stearns runs their front office, and owner Steve Cohen may have enough for Burnes even if he signs Juan Soto first.”
The Mets should be considered for every major free agent this summer because of how much money owner Steve Cohen is ready to spend. If the Mets miss out on Juan Soto, they will be strong contenders in the Burnes signing race.
