The St. Louis Cardinals are willing to trade their top third baseman, this winter. He has won the Platinum Glove six times, cementing his place as one of the best infield defenders in baseball history. However, with $52 million remaining on his contract, finding a suitor will be difficult. Given the Detroit Tigers’ propensity to purchase this winter, MLB Network’s Jon Morosi believes the Cardinals could find an ideal fit for Arenado there.
“The Tigers, who are known to be looking for right-handed batters, may be a potential trade partner for Arenado. “His willingness to play first base, according to Katie’s report, is appealing,” Morosi commented on X/Twitter. “The Tigers likely would ask for cash to be included in deal, given size of Arenado’s contract.”
I’m not sure why everyone appears to want to move Arenado off third base. He won ten straight Gold Glove trophies between 2013 and 2022 and has also been an elite defender in the last two years. If a team trades for Arenado, it should look for a spot to transfer its current third baseman, not Arenado.
In either case, the fit in Detroit makes sense. The Tigers require a right-handed batter, an infielder, and veteran leadership. Arenado is all three of those things rolled into one $52 million player. Detroit would just need the Tigers to eat half of his salary, and the two sides could most likely reach an agreement.
