Despite months of speculation about the Yankees’ interest in acquiring Nolan Arenado, YES Network’s Jack Curry stated that the organization “is not in” on the eight-time All-Star. This news follows weeks of trade speculations linking the Yankees to the St. Louis Cardinals’ star third baseman.
Arenado’s 2024 Performance
Despite showing symptoms of decline in 2024, Nolan Arenado remains one of Major League Baseball’s best third basemen. The 33-year-old cut.266/.321/.294 with 16 home runs, 71 RBIs, and a wRC+ of 102. While such figures are typical, they represent a decrease from his previous output.
Arenado continued to dazzle defensively, saving six runs and recording nine outs over average while maintaining his status as one of the league’s best third basemen.
A Complicated Fit for the Yankees
Arenado’s defensive prowess would likely improve the Yankees’ infield, particularly at third base, where his consistency would be beneficial.
Furthermore, his bat would provide some power and average productivity in a lineup that struggled for consistency around the bottom last year. However, Arenado’s offensive numbers may suffer even more in Yankee Stadium because his inclination to pull the ball to right field does not work well with the ballpark’s dimensions.
Contract Challenges and No-Trade Clause
Arenado is under contract for three more years, earning $25.5 million in luxury tax pay per year — $21.1 million with the Rockies offsetting money. For a team already flirting with the highest luxury tax thresholds, adding Arenado’s contract would necessitate major financial maneuvering.
Furthermore, Arenado has a full no-trade clause, which he recently used to reject a deal to the Houston Astros. Even if the Yankees were interested, any proposed move would require his agreement.
Yankees’ Focus Elsewhere
With Arenado off the table, the Yankees are expected to look into other options to address their infield issues. The potential of adding a flexible player to supplement their roster remains a priority, but it is evident that Arenado will not be in their plans for the 2025 season.
