Aaron Rodgers, the quarterback for the New York Jets, had one of his worst games of the season in a 40-14 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, and he may suffer additional consequences in the coming days. Rodgers battled with the Bills’ aggressive pass rush, throwing two interceptions and being sacked four times, including a second-quarter safety. He was eventually replaced by backup Tyrod Taylor in the fourth quarter, but not before making a potentially costly mistake.

After Bills cornerback Christian Benford intercepted a Rodgers pass in the third quarter, the Jets quarterback followed him down the sideline and shoved Benford out of bounds. Officials flagged Rodgers for a late hit, which moved the Bills closer into Jets territory and resulted in a touchdown.

The transgression may cost Rodgers his NFL contract. The league imposes sanctions for late hits, including a $11,255 charge for first-time offenders, and Rodgers would be eligible for the punishment when it is announced next Saturday.

Rodgers has already received fines, including one for $14,650 in March 2022 for breaking regulations for unvaccinated players. The Jets also penalized him more than $50,000 for an unexcused absence from the team’s mandated minicamp to travel to Egypt. The Jets quarterback stated at the time that the trip had been long planned and was worth accepting a fine from the team.

“Back in the doldrums of rehab, I thought it’d be fun to put together a trip with some friends,” Rodgers told CBS Sports. “I had a nice conversation with Robert. Obviously, he wanted me to attend minicamp. I knew what would happen if I wasn’t there. “The reaction is as it is.
