Before its College Football Playoff quarterfinal game against Georgia, Notre Dame football received an encouraging update on one of its potential young players. CJ Carr, a freshman quarterback, has been suffering with a throwing elbow issue all season, but he is almost back to full health.

According to Kyle Kelly of On3 Sports, Carr gave a brief but confident update on his rehabilitation on Monday.

“I feel unbelievable,” Carr told Kelly.

Carr also stated that he is 90-95% healthy and hopes to resume throwing and full participation in team activities by the spring. That’s good news for Notre Dame supporters, because the Irish will be looking for a new quarterback next season after Riley Leonard leaves.

Most of the top quarterback options in the transfer portal have already found new homes, and none of them are waiting to see if Notre Dame will search the portal for its next signal caller after signing Sam Hartman two off-seasons ago and Riley Leonard prior to this season.

Notre Dame currently has Steve Angeli as its backup quarterback, while Carr is a younger talent waiting in the wings. Carr was one of the top quarterback prospects in the country in the class of 2024, so Marcus Freeman and the Irish will be overjoyed that their young, talented quarterback will be back healthy soon.

While Carr provides a hopeful glimpse into Notre Dame football’s future, the Irish are in the midst of their most entertaining season. Notre Dame is preparing to face Georgia in a high-profile battle in the Sugar Bowl on Wednesday night, with a chance to return to the College Football Playoff semifinals for the first time in the 12-team format. This Notre Dame team feels like a legitimate title contender this season, and the game on New Year’s Day is one of the most important in program history as a result.
