The Toronto Blue Jays and their superstar first baseman, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., may not reach an agreement on a contract extension. Guerrero’s contract expires at the end of the 2025 season, and the young slugger recently saw Juan Soto get a deal for roughly $800 million. Guerrero is unlikely to sign an extension now that Soto has set the market so high. If the superstar slugger declines to sign an extension with the Blue Jays, Toronto may consider dealing him.

Christopher Kline of FanSided recently compiled a list of the top five potential suitors for the Blue Jays’ first baseman. Surprisingly, Kline ranked the New York Yankees second. “This would be the funniest outcome, if only because Guerrero once said he wanted to ‘kill’ the Yankees and would never play for the Bronx Bombers, citing a family beef,” Kline tweeted. “That happened a little over a year ago, so it’s not exactly ancient history. However, Guerrero, presumably anticipating this precise chain of events, has subsequently reversed his mind.

“The Yankees are desperate to replace Soto’s bat and build a star lineup around Judge. Guerrero, like Soto, is incredibly young but extremely accomplished. “He’s literally the next best option.” While the Yankees would love to acquire Guerrero, a deal is unlikely to happen.

For starters, the Blue Jays would be unwilling to trade their budding superstar to a bitter rival like New York. Even if they were willing to trade Guerrero to the Yankees, New York lacks the prospect money to make the deal work. This is simply not a realistic possibility, no matter how much the Yankees would like to see it happen. New York may sign him in free agency next winter, but not before then.
